Featured Podcast: GamerDads Live

We are not the only ones celebrating our anniversary! This month’s featured podcast belongs to GamerDads Live who has recently reached their one year milestone. The hosts, LostAssassin13, EthanJude, and Nien Numb provide you the details of their show, some future plans, and unforgettable moments of previous episodes. The Blue Skittle is proud to present the Straight Up Dorkin’ It podcast crew!
Tell me a bit about yourselves and the podcast.
LostAssassin13: I am 25, living in Arizona (originally from Michigan), and I work in computer support. I’m also the father of 2 boys.
EthanJude: Boys, FTW. I am a 31 year old father of 3 boys, and I have been married for over 9 years now. Being an avid gamer since the Atari 2600 days, I can now honestly say that my geekdom is finally reaching acceptance. Thank the maker!
Nien Numb: I am a 34ish, movie/gamer/comics nerd. And most importantly, I am a Dad and a husband. I think our podcast speaks to this growing demographic of adult geek. PS the prequels still suck.
EthanJude: Okay, so our podcast started as an extension of the discussion Nien and I had involving gaming and all things pop culture over at GamerDads Live.
Nien Numb: And I think in relation to our age group, there are a lot of kid and early 20’s podcasting.
LostAssassin13: I think as a podcast, we are really just trying to be that group of people that get together and talk in general about some of the 360 stuff coming up, and give our $.02 (sometimes more than that).
EthanJude: Definitely. Though anyone can listen, but unless you are steeped in your 80’s and 90’s pop culture lore, a lot of the jokes may not make sense. There are a fair amount of newer cultural references as well.
Nien Numb: Of course we are hip…from a certain point of view.
How is each show put together?
EthanJude: Each episode generally starts with an outline of news that either Nien or I put together. The outline generally has a section on new releases, demos and XBLA games, and even movie releases. The problem is that we have a hard time sticking to the script.
Nien Numb: Yes we are, verbose, for lack of a better or more appropriate term. I think our wives might have a different spin.
EthanJude: Problem is, or was, that I am all talk. I’m only a mic jockey. Nien and LostAssassin have all the tech savvy responsibilities.
LostAssassin13: From the tech end, we use Skype to conference and I record on my Macbook Pro, using Soundflower, LineIn, and Audacity. After we record, I send it off to Nien who then uses Final Cut Pro on his Mac. Converts it, and puts it up on the SUDI blog, as well as the GamerDads Live blog, and GamerDads Live site.
LostAssassin13: Bubble gum and duct tape….
EthanJude: Don’t kid yourself. It’s been so much better for us since LA13 came on, you guys do a great job.
What highlights are most memorable since the show has started?
EthanJude: Since the show started, Matt Damon has definitely been one of the highlights from Episode 5.
LostAssassin13: I have to say the Matt Damon episode (Episode 5), hands down.
EthanJude: It was also funny hearing Nien talk himself into liking the new Indiana Jones movie. No matter what the Beard (Lucas Beard, not Spielberg Beard) has done to him in the past. *cough* Phantom Menace *cough, cough*
Nien Numb: I would have to say Episode 2, but 6 was great while we were recording until we got some Jar Jar in the soup.
EthanJude: Jar Jar- FTL.
Nien Numb: What I liked about Episode 2 was the chemistry came together and with LA13 covering recording, Ethan and I were able to just focus on each other…in a geek way.
EthanJude: We were fortunate to hit a good stride early. If I can take off my humble cap for just a moment, one of the things we have received compliments on is the chemistry.
Nien Numb: It is Laverne and Shirleyesque
EthanJude: I would have preferred Lenny and Squiggy.
Any future plans for the show?
EthanJude: We’ve already got a couple of podcast interviews scheduled for the near future. I don’t want to jinx it, but let’s just say it’ll make fans of TBS proud!
Nien Numb: I was pulling for Matt Damon, but I guess we haven’t hit that level yet (Crosses fingers for Cole Hauser).
EthanJude: We’ve also got a Summer Preview show in the works, which will feature games and movies. I am really looking forward to this show as there are so many great games for this Summer and a boat load of geek films.
What are some of your favorite podcasts?
LostAssassin13: I regularly listen to Major Nelson’s podcast, TWiT, and Diggnation, though I have started listening to a little of Breaking the Game podcast. Podcasts are just nice to have playing on my computer while I am doing stuff at work.
Nien Numb: Strangely, I don’t really listen to podcasts. That may be why I am more scattershot. I listen to ours so much while editing, I really don’t have the time.
EthanJude: I listen to a couple of the major gaming ones. OXM is my favorite though; all the info with less fluff. Aside from that, I really enjoy the Relevant podcast from Relevant Magazine.
Nien Numb: I would like too, I am not trying to be above the fray…give me some good ones to try. Man, did I come off as above it all, aloof?
EthanJude: Not sure how to respond to that…
Nien Numb: Thanks, Squiggy.
